NEW PRINT! Captivating Exmoor Sunset Painting
Step into a world where sunsets dance with colour and time seems to stand still- capturing the beauty of a fleeting moment that fills you with warmth and the awe-inspiring beauty that exists in the world.
Bringing this painting ‘Come Up Here’ to life was a both meaningful and timely encouragement for both myself and the orginal art collector who had a profound collision with her favourite ‘Pink Floyd’ song as she first laid on this painting - I’ll let you read on to hear that story!
Ahead of it’s release as a limited edition print > I share a little about how it served as a reminder that beauty & reassurance can be found in even the simplest moments plus…

The Story Behind The Exmoor Painting
Inspired by an icy winter walk alone through the tranquil Exmoor hills, whilst contemplating some unexpected (and somewhat unwelcome) situations that had arisen at the time, I suddenly felt the icy cold bite of winter air upon my face.
I’d taken the first step into the shadow of a deep valley.
The icy bite of the cold felt as unwelcome as the circumstances I was churning over in my mind.
As I began to think twice about going any further into the valley the light of the sun began to break through the clouds. Lessening the sting of the cold it rested gently upon my back - it felt reassuring.
Encouraged by this simple encounter I was moved to capture it in paint. Even whilst bringing this piece to life in my studio it served as a reminder that, whilst some circumstances in life can bite like the cold, to look for those people, places and things in life that glow like the warmth of the sun on your back as you pass through your valley, a step at a time, until you are out the other side.
Inspired By The Peace Of Exmoor National Park
Exmoor National Park > is a haven of natural beauty, boasting rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and ancient woodlands. It is a place where nature's artistry is on full display, inviting you to lose yourself in its vastness.
As the sun begins to set, Exmoor's moorland transforms into an ethereal realm that often whispers of hope through uplighting shifts of colour and light.
Light Is The Brush That Paints The World
Painting the sky with these subtle shifts of colour- the rich warm hues of ochre, pink, gold and earthy greens - all blend harmoniously in the initial thin layers of the painting recapturing that sense of awe and wonder as I paint.
Light and colour has the remarkable ability to evoke emotions within us, stirring feelings of joy, hope, and inspiration.
In 'Come Up Here,' the palette of Exmoor's sunset orginally evolved from one of my smaller works on paper > . I use them to playfully experiment with colours and ideas quickly, and quite often pave the way for larger work.
From this study study I was particularly drawn to the subtle (and unplanned!) dance of mauves and pale greens in the sky of the study, which I wanted to use to amplify the sun-lit heights and sense of hope against the shadowy depths.
When Pink Floyd & Painting Collide 🎨🎶
You're probably already aware how music and painting share a harmonious connection (it's why I call my paintings ‘unwritten melodies’).
But it's the first time I'd heard of this recent collector sharing how their favourite song that carries a lot of meaning to them began to play across their mind as soon as they saw this painting from across the room at the Enys Gardens exhibition.
She said she knew in that moment the painting was for her.
The song was ‘Come Back To Life’ by Pink Floyd if you know it?
(I confess I didn't… but once I Googled it, I couldn't help but see the similarity in the lighting stage design and the sunbeams in the painting!)
