Capturing Mawgan Porth Beach in a Memorable Wedding Gift Painting Commission

A WEDDING ART COMMISSION - A LASTING REMINDER OF A BEAUTIFUL DAY FULL OF SHARED HAPPY MEMORIES IN YOUR HOME.

For this couple the choice to return to Cornwall to get married was a special one - once home in years previous and a shared love for the beautiful Cornish coast.

To mark the occasion they wanted a special large original oil painting of Mawgan Porth Beach, where they’d be swimming the morning of their wedding and the view from their room a the Luxury Coastal & Spa Scarlet Hotel.

1.Sharing The Idea

After reaching out to me through my Instagram initially, April shared with me over some emails how she wanted her coastal painting to focus on:

  • the rolling waves and flowers

  • with lots of painterly marks and splashes,

  • all with a hint of a golden glow sunset
(although not too much of one as they’re not biggest fans of orange!)

2. Gathering Inspiration From The Location

As April didn’t have own reference photos, l was able to travel to the location to gather some of my own inspiration. It undoubtedly inspires the painting.

So as I climbed the cliffs, looking back at the Mawgan Porth cottages scattered across the cliffside, leaving behind the noises of the Merrymoor pub below, I found the perfect spot to sketch the beach as the sun began to sink behind the horizon and soak up my first impressions and colours. It might of been the wrong season for the sea thrift flowers that April wanted, but a little artist license goes a long way!

3. Getting On The Same Page

Not all commissions require thumbnail sketches, but they can be very helpful for visualizing how composition, colors, and focal points will work together when multiple images are being used to inspire the painting.

Thumbnails are very quick sketches I use to help visually explain ideas in our consultation to make sure we are on the same page.

Personal Delivery

The Unveiling

As part of the surprise gift experience for her fiance, April asked if I could personally deliver the painting to them at the The Scarlet Hotel. I love to do this where I can- it’s lovely to meet the people who will be enjoying a piece of my art for years to come and see the expressions on their face the first time they see it!
